When you have a cut, platelets are released allowing immediate blood clotting hence stopping the bleeding. Therefore anti-platelet drugs are powerful medication that prevents blood clots. This is a very good process but when an injury to a blood vessel happens, there is aggregation of the platelets especially if a blood vessel has been injured. For instance, during atherosclerosis, blood clotting is caused on already stressed artery and here is where the ant-platelet medication comes in to prevent this from happening. The commonly known ant-platelet medication include Aspirin and the other common one used to treat heart diseases include the Plavix (clopidogrel bisulfate) and Ticlid (ticlopidine hydrochloride).
